About The Norfolk Broads National Park

The Norfolk Broads National Park spans approximately 303 square kilometers of rivers, lakes, wetlands, and surrounding countryside located primarily in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, England. Formed by the flooding of medieval peat excavations, the Broads consist of more than 125 miles of navigable waterways, making it the UK’s premier destination for inland boating. The park’s mix of reed beds, marshes, wet woodlands, and open water supports an exceptional variety of habitats and species, including rare birds such as the bittern, marsh harrier, and the elusive water vole. Historically, the Broads evolved from peat digging in medieval times, later flooding to create the current landscape of broads or lakes, which shape the distinctive flat, water-rich environment. Visitors are drawn to the area for activities like sailing, canoeing, cycling, fishing, and birdwatching, with numerous designated trails and historic villages dotting the landscape. Iconic landmarks include How Hill, a nature reserve with panoramic views, and the scenic town of Wroxham, often called the 'capital' of the Broads. The Norfolk Broads Authority manages conservation and recreation with a focus on sustainable tourism, balancing the needs of wildlife, water quality, and human enjoyment. The park’s peaceful, open waters combined with rich biodiversity create an accessible outdoor destination appealing to families, anglers, naturalists, and water sports enthusiasts.
